“Gawain’s Problems with Lineage and the Myth of Trojan Ancestry in the Original Arthurian Grail Romance”
This lecture will focus on characters in the Aeneid that are referred to in Chrétien’s text in ways that contend with legal issues of the time. In particular, these issues are examined with regard to memory, witness, pity, piety and narrative authority, and how they may intersect.

“The Chivalric Quest for a Lost Mother: Parallels between Twelfth-Century Arthurian Grail Romance and Virgil’s Aeneid”
This lecture will draw comparisons between these two texts with an in depth examination of the episode of Perceval’s visit to the grail castle and the Aeneid’s Polydorus episode, including the famous bleeding lance.

“Gold, Faith, and the Polydorus Allusion in Canto XIII of Dante’s Inferno”
Professor Rockwell revisits a traditional interpretation of an allusion in the Aeneid and draws a comparison to a scene in Dante’s Inferno. Professor Rockwell will discuss how the image of Dante breaking a twig off of a bush represents one of the souls condemned to the circle of the suicides and how important this metaphor is for Dante as he explores the relationship between language and memory.
